Health Economics and Cost Effectiveness

The course provides students basic economic concepts and principles for better resource management in the health care sector; in-depth understanding of the Public finance approach to policy questions relating to the role of government and other stakeholders; use of methodologies of both cost and demand analyses, and how to make use of such analyses in policy planning and evaluation. Practical skills in cost effectiveness analysis of public health services and programs.

By the end of the course, students will be able to describe basic concepts of health economics and of public finance; develop an understanding of the relationships between health and economic development in developing countries; application of methodologies of both cost and demand analyses; analyze the cost and cost behavior in hospital environment; explain economic basis for cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis, and undertake such analyses.
